Preamble

THE SUPREME COURT (NUMBER OF JUDGES) ACT, 1956

[Act, No. 55 of 1956]

[16th September, 1956]

PREAMBLE

An Act to provide for an increase in the number of Judges of the Supreme Court, excluding the Chief Justice.

Be it enacted by Parliament in the Seventy Year of the Republic India as follows :-

Section 1. Short title

This Act may be called the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.

Section 2. Maximum number of Supreme Court Judges, other than Chief Justice

The maximum number of Judges of the Supreme Court, excluding the Chief Justice of India, shall be 1 [thirty]

1. Substituted for "seventeen" by the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) (Amendment) Act, 1986, w.e.f. 09-05-1986. Again Substituted for "twenty-five" by the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) (Amendment) Act, 2008.

An Act further to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Twenty-eighth Year of the Republic of India as follows :--

1. Short title.-

This Act may be called the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 1977.

2. Amendment of section 2.-

In section 2 of the Supreme Court (umber of Judges) Act, 1956 (55 of 1956.), for the words "thirteen", the words "seventeen" shall be substituted.
